Do This After Canoeing and Recover in No Time!

I love outdoor activities, very much! and canoeing has become one of the best options to spend my spare time, especially when on the weekend or whenever I’m away from working. Apart from its fun and excitement, canoeing can also be used as training and exercising. Just like playing game at, canoeing can be one of the best adrenaline-enhancing game especially for me a water sport junky.

On the other hand, this kind of sport can be very exhausting. I will always need an effective break and relaxation after a good canoeing. But, does drinking and sleeping ever enough to restore my stamina? Is there any effective way to restore fatigue after canoeing? Check out a few tips on how I recover from tiring days of canoeing.

  1. Relaxation

As important as warming up before sport, I also recommend you to do some relaxation right after the exercise or any heavy activity. Its function is to restore any tense muscles back to its original state, so your muscles won’t get cramped or injured.

  1. Cool Down

The human body has a remarkable ability to take care of itself, yet your body needs time to do it. So, I try not to do heavy activity for some times after canoeing. Give my body time to recuperate before any other heavy activity is the best way to keep my body stay healthy.

  1. Meditation

Exercise means to push the body and mind beyond its limits, in other words put yourself in a state of stress. For that you need a good meditation to reduce stress and calm the mind to become more relaxed.

  1. Bath

Give yourself a time and take some break until your body temperature returns to normal, bathe with warm water for 4-5 minutes then rinse with cold water for 1 minute. Warm water expands the blood vessels while cold water makes it contract, this condition will accelerate blood flow.


You must replace the energy you spent during canoeing, erase all that fatigue and exhaustion from your body to get stronger and ready for the next challenge. Ideally, you eat 60 minutes after exercise and eat high quality protein and complex carbohydrates.

  1. Drink

Drinking water during exercise is just as important as keeping it hydrated after exercise. I usually drink 2-3 glasses within 2 hours after exercise then drink regularly to prevent dehydration.

Massage can improve blood circulation so the body becomes more relaxed. Good and regular massage is important, do it at least once a month.

  1. Don’t Overdo Yourself

As explained before, you need time to recover the body back to its original state. Be smart to schedule your exercise and do it routinely. Don’t force your body to exercise excessively because it will only damage and harm yourself.


Canoeing can be so much fun if you do it right. Do it regularly but don’t be too pushy to do something more than your body can do. You also need a good and enough rest to stay fit and amazing. Stay healthy and keep canoeing!

Canoeing is definitely a really interesting activity because you can enjoy the nature, the water, and the scenery and at the same time, you can also take it as a kind of sport. But, for the beginners, canoeing should not be considered as a really simple activity to do because there’s still some dangerous potential. You can find the tips to deal with canoeing for beginners.

  1. Learn from the Pros

No matter how simple canoeing may seem, it’s always a good idea to learn from the pros first before you really get into the canoe and start paddling. Canoeing may seem like a really safe activity because you basically just paddling in a little boat. But, we never know what happens when we’re doing that. And without any proper skills, canoeing can be rather dangerous. That’s why once again, it’s nice to learn from the pros. If it’s possible, get a lesson and then start getting used to canoeing before you really do it for real.

This tip is often forgotten by many people including those who are already familiar with canoeing. They usually dress up for the weather instead of for the water. It’s possible for the weather to be really clear and sunny. Such weather definitely temps you to wear short clothes. But, it’s possible that the water is cold. Even though you don’t intend to get into the water but with such cold water, it’s possible for you to catch a cold if you don’t dress up properly. That’s why it’s totally a good thing to always wear something warm.

  1. Get the Proper Boat

Yes, it’s really important because the boat is the only thing that separates you from the water. The boat can also be said as the only thing to determine your safety. That’s why it’s vital to choose the proper boat. Make sure you do a thorough check before you really get into the water with the boat. Make it certain the boat isn’t leaking. Check also if the condition is still good. If you are not sure about the quality and the condition of your boat, ask the more experienced canoers or simply change the boat.


  1. Always Carry Buoyancy Around

This is really vital for the beginners because the chance for you to get into the water is bigger than the people who have already been so experienced with canoeing. Without carrying any buoyancy around, it’s going to be quite dangerous for you. Even though you are good at swimming, the stream of the water may make things become lethal once you get into the water. That’s why it’s highly recommended for you to carry buoyancy around or even better, wear the buoyancy with you. That way whenever you get into the water, you won’t be drowned.

For your information, if you have already sit properly in your boat, it’s going to deal with half of the safety and comfort when you’re canoeing. That’s why it’s a really important thing for you to really know how to sit properly in the boat. How to do it? Well, it seems quite hard to describe the right way to do it here. It’s going to be so good if you take the lesson like the tip mentioned before because the sitting position should already be included in the lesson.

Again, although you don’t intend to get into the water, you never know what’s going to happen whenever you are really canoeing. It’s very possible for you to encounter an unexpected stream which makes your boat capsized and thus, you will need to get wet. Therefore, it’s always a good thing for you to carry extra clothes so you will not get cold. Once again, you need to remember that canoeing should be a kind of activity that makes you happy. If you get sick after doing it, then, it’s not happy anymore, right? Prevention is always a nice thing to do and thus, you should do it.

We don’t want bad things to happen to ourselves whenever we are canoeing. However, whenever the bad things really happen, you really need to know what to do. You need to stay calm instead of getting panic attack. You need to know how to save yourself. Even though you are canoeing with the other people, don’t expect them to help you that much whenever bad things happen because it’s possible that those people may be quite far away from you. If you are not able to save yourself, it’s possible for those people to come late to get and help you. Learning how to get out of the capsized boat and then learn how to swim to the surface properly will really help a lot.

The last tip is to avoid canoeing alone so it’s going to be safer for you. This is to prevent if something bad happens to you or to the other people. Whenever such condition really does happen, you know that there’s always someone to rely on although it’s still a good thing if you know what to do to save your own self. Not to mention, don’t you think it’s going to be merrier if there’s more people to canoe with?


Short Biography of Tad Dennis

Lately, the name of Timothy Alan Dennis or also known as Ted Dennis has become a kind of rising star in the world of canoeing. We’re talking about a world-class canoe athlete here whose achievements are no joke at all. Recently, he’s the member of USA canoe and also kayak national team specializing in slalom canoe division. This athlete was born in Riverdale, Georgia back in May 28, 1984. Peachtree City is where he grew up and in that city he also attended McIntosh High School. He graduated in 2002.

tad dennisHis love towards canoeing and kayaking started when Tad Dennis was still a boy. It was when he was still 7 years old, Tad found his love in kayaking. The one responsible in creating such passion for Tad Dennis was his father. Tad’s father literally throw the kayak boat in front of his son and started teaching him everything he knew about kayaking. And it turned out that Tad was really in love with kayaking. Tad always practiced with his father when he was still a boy. And 4 years after that, when he was 11 years old, he entered his first sport tournament of whitewater slalom. Since then, he has become the member of US National Team for the cadet age group.

For 2 years, Tad was always competing in the division of solo kayak. When he was 14 years old, he then switched the division to men’s single canoe division. Until the age of 17, Tad Dennis was the member of the US National Team for its junior age group. And back in 2001, he won his first international championship even though it was not the first position. He finished at the fourth position during the Junior World Cup race which was held in Prague, Czech Republic.

tad dennis - youngSince then, Tad often joined in competitions and won some of them. However, something bad happened to him. He suffered from injury which forced him to go on hiatus for several years. He was in a terrible car accident that happened in August of 2004. In that accident, his truck rolled off when he drove it at a mountain road. And because of that, his left leg was crushed and his left hand was broken. As if it was not enough for him, an accident happened again. It was when Tad felt like everything was getting better and he was ready to paddle again.

But, then, he found that his L1 vertebra which is located in his back was fractured. That condition happened when he was running the Great Falls at the Potomac River. With such injury, Tad needed to stay away from paddling for several more months. But it did not make him forget his love to kayaking and canoeing. He started his passion again after fully recovered from the injury back in 2006 during the summer. And even he had been on hiatus for four years, it did not make his skills rusty. As the proof, in that same year after his comeback, Tad successfully claimed the 8th position during the US National Championship which was held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Then his achievements got even better.

In the spring of 2007, Tad was successful in gaining the 3rd position during 2007 USA Canoe/Kayak National Team Trials. And because of that, Tad gained the third and also the last place on the men’s C1 division of the US National Team. The following year, during spring 2008, 3d position was successfully achieved during the moment of US Olympic Team Trials held at the US National Whitewater Center. Sadly, even with such achievement, Tad was not successful in gaining the title to represent the United States in Summer Olympic Games in 2008.

Instead, his teammate Benn Fraker was selected. In order to keep the ends meet, in addition to kayaking, he also works at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport as an air traffic controller. Even though he is currently busy working, he always tries to find the moment to keep on paddling. He trains every day without any break at all and his training routine combines mountain biking, running, flat-water paddling, weight lifting, and many other necessary exercises to make sure he is always in the peak of the shape. And surely, he trains even further whenever there’s a competition coming.
